Music by Charles Wesley, 1763. Text by Ananias Davisson, 1816. (Text amended for this recording) 1. And am I born to die? To lay this body down! And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown? 2. A land of deepest shade, Unpierced by human thought; The dreary regions of the dead, Where all things are forgot? 3. Soon as from earth I go, What will my portion be? Eternal happiness or woe Must then my fortune be. 4. Waked by the trumpet sound, I from my grave shall rise; And see the Sun with glory crowned, And see the flaming skies.

about

The music on this album may not sound like classical music you’re used to hearing. It will be slower, less active, way more chaotic. Listen to it as you might listen to the ocean, or to the sound of rain as you lay in bed. Try to settle into a peaceful internal place, and listen as patiently you would watch a sunset. Now’s a chance to leave the frenetic madness of our world behind and tune into something deeper.

This is the first in a series of eight volumes, making the solstices, equinoxes, and cross quarter days, presented by the Regenerate! Orchestra. We're an organization seeking to radically rethink the orchestra for the Twenty-first Century, with community at its center. We want to make orchestral music more inclusive, thrilling, and sustainable.

This album is for the Winter Solstice. This is an occasion of great spiritual significance for many. It represents the longest night of the year, which can be a symbolic vessel for loss, for trial, for grief, for the pain we face, have faced. It also represents the point in the year when the days start getting longer, little by little. Each tomorrow gives more sunlight than each yesterday. I’ve always been moved by the dual contradictory significance; these simultaneous feelings of grief and hope characterize much of this place and time.

Music that brings folks closer to nature, the land, and each other.
Based in Southeast Michigan.

I thank everyone who gave money towards this project. It was supported by the Meta Weiser EXCEL Fund, and by everyone who contributed by buying an album or a ticket. Most importantly, I celebrate the wonderful community that gives life to this orchestra.
