about

One of the most powerful songs in the Sacred Harp tradition, “Idumea” faces human mortality directly, expressing universal feelings of pain and fear that accompany considerations of death. The hymn ends with resolve, placing faith in a spiritual resurrection to come.

lyrics

Music by Charles Wesley, 1763.
Text by Ananias Davisson, 1816.
(Text amended for this recording)

1. And am I born to die?
To lay this body down!
And must my trembling spirit fly
Into a world unknown?

2. A land of deepest shade,
Unpierced by human thought;
The dreary regions of the dead,
Where all things are forgot?

3. Soon as from earth I go,
What will my portion be?
Eternal happiness or woe
Must then my fortune be.

4. Waked by the trumpet sound,
I from my grave shall rise;
And see the Sun with glory crowned,
And see the flaming skies.
